How the daily pin-drop score works
Every day there are five questions. For each one you drop a pin on the world map, and we measure how far your pin is from the real place. The closer you are, the more points you get.
The numbers
- Within 50 km of the answer you get all 200 points.
- From 50 km to 5,000 km the score drops in a straight line.
- At 5,000 km or more you get 0.
- Five questions make a total out of 1,000.
So a pin 2,525 km away, about halfway between the two limits, scores about 100. The distance is measured over the surface of the Earth, not across the flat map, which is why a pin near the far edge of the map can still be close to the answer.
The colours
After each answer the result is coloured. Green is 150 points or more, yellow is 75 to 149, and red is anything lower. If you land within 50 km you get a trophy instead of a colour circle. When you share your score, those symbols are what your friends see, one for each question.
Why zooming matters
At full zoom one pixel on a phone can be more than 100 km. Use the plus button or pinch to zoom in before you place the pin. You can tap again to move it, and nothing is scored until you press Guess.
