Central Park is a big green park in the middle of New York City. Northern cardinals live in its shrubs and trees all year and do not migrate. In winter, a red male against the snow is easy to spot. Cardinals are the state bird of seven US states, including Ohio and Virginia.

Qinghai Lake is the biggest lake in China, high on the Tibetan Plateau. Every spring, bar-headed geese fly here to nest on its islands and shores. In autumn they fly south across the Himalayas to spend the winter in India, where the weather is much warmer.

Nile crocodiles rest on the muddy banks of the Mara River, which winds through Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. Between July and October, huge herds of wildebeest cross the river, and the crocodiles wait in the water. After eating a big meal, a Nile crocodile can go for weeks without eating again.

Sandoval Lake is a quiet oxbow lake in the Tambopata rainforest of southeast Peru. Black caimans lie in the shallows and hunt fish, capybaras and other animals, mostly at night. Hunters once took so many for their skins that black caimans became rare, but in protected places like this they are coming back.
