Tanjung Puting National Park is in Central Kalimantan, the Indonesian part of Borneo. Visitors travel along the Sekonyer River by boat through swamp forest, and orangutans often come to the riverbank. A research camp called Camp Leakey has studied orangutans here since 1971.

Big Bend National Park in far west Texas sits in a big curve of the Rio Grande, the river that forms the border with Mexico. Nine-banded armadillos crossed the Rio Grande from Mexico into Texas in the 1800s and have since spread across much of the southern United States. They dig for beetles, ants and worms with their strong claws, mostly at night.

Each year floodwater from the highlands of Angola spreads across northern Botswana and fills the Okavango Delta. African rock pythons live among the reeds, islands and woodland beside these waterways. They swim well and hunt at night for birds, rodents and small antelope.

In 1952 workers building a road near Yibin in Sichuan, China, uncovered giant bones at a spot called Mamenxi. The animal was named Mamenchisaurus after it. Its neck made up about half of its body length, and it lived about 160 million years ago.
