Rhode Island Reds were bred in the late 1800s by farmers in southeastern New England, especially around Little Compton, Rhode Island. Farmers wanted hens that laid plenty of brown eggs and stayed healthy through cold winters. There is a small monument to the breed in Adamsville, a village in Little Compton. Rhode Island named it the state bird in 1954.
