Everglades National Park in Florida is a wide, shallow river of grass that moves slowly south to the sea. American alligators live in its ponds, creeks and marshes. In the dry season they dig deep holes that stay full of water, and fish, turtles and birds crowd in to survive.

Atlas moths live in the tropical forests of southern and Southeast Asia. Kinabalu Park on the island of Borneo has forest from the lowlands up the slopes of Mount Kinabalu. The caterpillars eat leaves and grow fat. The adults have no working mouth, so they live for only a week or two.

High in the Alps, monks at a hospice on the Great Saint Bernard Pass bred the Saint Bernard. The pass is a mountain road between Switzerland and Italy, and the monks used the big dogs to help find travellers lost in deep snow. A Saint Bernard called Barry, who lived in the early 1800s, is said to have saved dozens of people.

Serengeti National Park in Tanzania is a huge plain of golden grass and scattered acacia trees. Lions rest in the shade by day and hunt zebras and wildebeest, often as a team. A group of lions is called a pride, and the females do most of the hunting.

In winter, West Indian manatees crowd into Kings Bay at Crystal River on the west coast of Florida. Springs there keep the water at about 22 degrees Celsius all year, which is much warmer than the Gulf of Mexico in cold weather. Manatees are gentle plant eaters that spend many hours a day grazing on seagrass.
