Eastern box turtles walk slowly over the forest floor, especially after rain, looking for worms, mushrooms, berries and insects. Each turtle spends most of its life in a small patch of woods.

Lop Nur is a dry salt lake bed in Xinjiang, in the far west of China. Wild Bactrian camels roam the hard, stony desert around it. They can drink salty water that most animals cannot, which helps them survive where fresh water is rare.

Feldberg is the highest mountain in the Black Forest in southwest Germany, and damp, mossy woods with cool streams cover its slopes. Fire salamanders hide under logs and stones by day and come out on rainy nights to eat slugs, worms and insects. Their bright yellow and black skin warns other animals that they taste bad.

In 1947 an expedition working at Ghost Ranch in northern New Mexico found the bones of many Coelophysis packed together in one spot. It was a light, slim hunter about three metres long that lived roughly 210 million years ago. Coelophysis is the official state fossil of New Mexico.
